Job Description

Primary job role is the collection, abstraction, and complex analysis of clinical data (from 88-200 data points per patient) for all trauma registry cases.
1) Review multiple records, hard copy, and electronic formats, to abstract patient demographics, pre-hospital statistics, vital signs, clinical and operative procedures, diagnostics, toxicology screens, co-morbidities, and performance improvement complications, accurately coding each utilizing the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS), ICD-9/10 codes, E-codes, and activity codes as mandated by all regulators.
Additionally, must possess understanding of trauma scoring systems (GCS, ISS, POS, TRISS, MM ratings. Data is subsequently analyzed for exclusion or inclusion into the Trauma One database to ensure that the hospital remains compliant with standards related to American College of Surgeons (ACS), National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB), MA Dept of Public Health (DPH) and Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) for national benchmarking.
2) Performs integral functions to facilitate the departments performance improvement team. Works with the Trauma PI nurse, program manager and Trauma medical director to prepare documentation for weekly PI meetings. Additionally responsible for ensuring that all noted complications requiring loop closure are noted in the registry database.
3) Responsible for mandated submissions to DPH, NTDB, TQIP. Maintains interdepartmental, state, and national correspondence and communication when appropriate.
4) Liaison for Trauma service and State Medical Examiners office. Reports deaths and seeks subsequent autopsy findings. Documents findings into registry ensuring loop closure. Liaison for registry database vendor (ESO), BH-HIM,
5) Produce reports utilizing the registry database. Performs scheduled and ad hoc report production for BH physicians, departments, administrators and for the ACS for accreditation initiatives.
6) Initiates daily hospital data imports. Retrieves trauma service documentation from ED and Midas.
7) Candidate is an integral member of the multidisciplinary trauma team. Responsible for documentation and management of the registry database as it relates to clinical research, benchmarking, accreditation surveys, performance improvement and injury prevention initiatives.
8) May attend daily rounds to assist in identifying complications for presentation at weekly MM meetings as well as monthly Performance Improvement Patient Safety meetings.
9) Participates in ongoing departmental meetings and educational opportunities to enhance job performance.
10) Ensures related horizontal and vertical quality performance improvement communication hospital-wide is managed in a highly confidential and timely manner.
11) Contact and point of contact for ESO (registry database vendor) working on technical issues. Works with IT and Trauma Program Manager on problem resolution related to computer applications, updates, deadlines, and data quality.

Required Work Experience:

1) Solid clinical knowledge and experience
2) Minimum 2 years of registry experience at a Level I or Level II Trauma Center

) Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, coding, and organ systems
